Tom Anderson (00:07)
This is Basic AF episode ninety-six. Show notes for this episode can be found at basicafshow dot com. Hello and welcome. I'm Tom Anderson, joined as always by Jeff Battersby. Hello, Jeff Battersby. You're looking radiant, sir.
Jeff Battersby (00:21)
Mm good morning, Tom
Anderson. Say what? What did you say? Radiant. Okay, great. Let's
Tom Anderson (00:24)
I say you are looking radiant. It's your little Christmas light shining off your head.
Jeff Battersby (00:31)
l shut up.
Tom Anderson (00:33)
I mean, they're shining off in mine too, so it's okay. But I'm just trying to pay you a compliment. Yeah. Take it, crying out loud. Learn to accept a compliment.
Jeff Battersby (00:35)
Yeah, right. your forehead, but right, I can see that. All the glowing lights. Good, thank you. Whatever.
Is that what it is? I think you're just trying to date me, Tom.
Tom Anderson (00:49)
Don't tell Joe. Speaking of, hello Joe Moyer. Welcome back to the show.
Joe Moyer (00:54)
Hi. Thanks for having me back. And I I wanna just say I have a full head of hair, so I've got enough for all of us. So we're good.
Jeff Battersby (01:00)
good, thank you.
Tom Anderson (01:00)
Good.
Good. Joe's the young buck of the group. Yeah, hanging out with us old guys.
Jeff Battersby (01:02)
It's you're right. What happens is
Joe Moyer (01:05)
Yeah, technically.
Jeff Battersby (01:07)
I get a I get an envelope once a month from Joe with the his hair in it and I
Tom Anderson (01:11)
Ha ha ha.
Joe Moyer (01:12)
Works out. Yep. It's a little weird.
Jeff Battersby (01:15)
I I glue it onto my head. It's a little different than the color of my eyebrows and
Tom Anderson (01:20)
Must be on the back 'cause I'm not seeing it up front yet. Okay. All right, it's not
Jeff Battersby (01:22)
No, is there nothing up front pile. No, I haven't
Joe Moyer (01:23)
yeah.
Jeff Battersby (01:25)
gotten this month's order. That's all
Tom Anderson (01:27)
Ha ha.
Joe Moyer (01:27)
Yeah, it's
I'll put it in the mail on Monday.
Tom Anderson (01:30)
Or is it that little piece on your chin there? Maybe that's what I'd asked.
Jeff Battersby (01:30)
If hey. Listen, if our president
Joe Moyer (01:33)
boy.
Jeff Battersby (01:34)
can glue hair to his head, I can do the same thing.
Joe Moyer (01:38)
yeah. Whatever
Tom Anderson (01:37)
True. Possibilities
Joe Moyer (01:39)
you need to do to feel feel confident.
Tom Anderson (01:39)
are endless.
Jeff Battersby (01:43)
my god, okay.
Tom Anderson (01:43)
All right. Well,
we have a packed show prep note today, all stemming
Jeff Battersby (01:48)
Mm.
Tom Anderson (01:49)
from Apple's event this past week. and so we want to dig into that. We thought it'd be fun to have Joe come on. I I know he was with us with WWDC recap with Riley Hill back a couple months ago. so welcome back, Joe.
Joe Moyer (02:04)
Thanks.
Tom Anderson (02:05)
We're gonna run through the whole thing, talk about obviously the the products, whether or not we're going to be buying anything, which if you've l listened to this show for any amount of time, you know that's a yes at least to something. but before we get too much into the products, this was the first event with new CEO John Turnus. He was
Jeff Battersby (02:27)
Dude, knocked it out of the park, by the way.
Tom Anderson (02:29)
great.
Jeff Battersby (02:30)
Yeah. I I d very comfortable in front of a camera. you know. Don't get me wrong, I love Tim. But even the brief moment in the video where he, you know, is about to i in introduce John, to the man just is not not made for camera work. That's all I gotta say. That guy's not John Turnus, I thought killed it.
Tom Anderson (02:55)
Yeah, he was good. What do you think, Joe?
Joe Moyer (02:58)
Yeah, I I agree. not that this matters to anyone except nerds like us, but Turnus was the guy I wanted once I kind of found out he was in the running. just seems smart. has been at Apple a long time. And also he just Jeff, you're right, he seems a little bit more comfortable talking to people in front of the camera and I thought he did a great job. So yeah, it felt very natural. And obviously we've we've been seeing him for years. So it it felt like a very smooth transition.
Jeff Battersby (03:25)
Yeah, hundred percent. So yeah, felt the same way. I still wish we had live events, but whatever.
Joe Moyer (03:32)
Yeah. Tom, what'd you think?
Tom Anderson (03:36)
No, I agree with all that. I thought he was very good. as you mentioned there in the previous events, the sections that he was in for hardware and things like that was always good. So yeah, there's no complaints here. We'll be interesting to see w you know how what he does over the next five, ten years as CEO or however long he's there. but we'll see. But the start was good, at least for the event.
Jeff Battersby (04:02)
Yeah. No, I think so. Think you nailed it. All right. Let's not bury the lead. it we'll s we'll start with the biggest the biggest thing that everybody knew was coming, and that is the iPhone Duo, which not available for order until the octo the sixteenth of October. and then delivering on October twenty third. So most people think get that. it I have already said that I am not interested in
This is not something that I really think I need, but my goodness did I like it and the sound that it makes when it closes and opens. insane. my god,
Tom Anderson (04:42)
Wasn't that nice?
Joe Moyer (04:43)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (04:44)
that the clickiness of it. There's and you know, Apples it it it's interesting to me, but Apple's always been really good at that kind of tactile experience. You know, everything about it
Joe Moyer (04:58)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (04:58)
is is really good. So
While I'm not interested in this still, I have to say that you know, I I did have the little, you know, pupils dilate in my palm sweat
Joe Moyer (05:14)
Ha ha ha.
Jeff Battersby (05:16)
for a second when I when I finally
Tom Anderson (05:16)
Ha ha ha.
Jeff Battersby (05:18)
saw this. So pretty pretty slick device. So f five point four inch outer display, seven point six inch inside when when you open it up, it has nano texture, which
I've got things to say about that. the the just by comparison, iPad mini is 8.3 inches. So this is I think we said this before, this is about the same size open as the as the iPad mini is. thinnest iPhone ever went open. so this is even thinner than the i iPad or sorry iPhone Air. Has touch ID. Tom loves that.
one of his favorite
Joe Moyer (06:01)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (06:01)
features and a new version of iOS specifically for this. One of the things, by the way, that that in the we can talk about this, I I kinda can't wait to get my hands on one of these just to see it. But the animations when it goes from closed to open back to closed again, frigging amazing. Delicious. Beautiful
Joe Moyer (06:23)
Yeah. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (06:24)
to see. Like it really again, attention to detail.
So very, very interesting. so there's a new version of iOS that goes goes into this. you can have multiple apps side by side, which is kind of cool. dock on the right side. sure as heck hoping that that could be doc on the left side because I do all my phone work left handed. I don't do anything right handed. Not that
Tom Anderson (06:57)
Well they knew you weren't gonna
get it, so they didn't put that in.
Joe Moyer (07:00)
That's right. They w they said Jeff's all set? Yeah, we're good.
Jeff Battersby (07:00)
is that why? Okay. The batter Pattersby's not getting it. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (07:02)
That's why. Yeah. Yeah. I mean they
reached out to me separately and were like, Are you sure Jeff's not gonna get it? I was like he's a hundred percent out. And they were like, Okay, we're
Jeff Battersby (07:10)
Yeah.
Joe Moyer (07:10)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (07:11)
doc on doc on the right. We'll we'll do that. By the way, d the doc is on the left on my computer too. So that's that's just a me thing. but yeah, I'm I'm a weirdo and I get it. But it does make me wonder whether or not that I I presume that that's gonna be an option because if you're a lefty, you're gonna want that on the on the left hand side. I'm not a lefty, but I do
Tom Anderson (07:33)
Yeah, and I
would think if it's not on day one it would be like in an update 'cause I think enough people are gonna want that. But as good as they are with
Jeff Battersby (07:39)
Bro.
Tom Anderson (07:40)
accessibility, I'd be surprised if they did not account for that.
Jeff Battersby (07:43)
Yeah, I I'm sure. I'm sure that they're that they did. dual batteries for what they say is all day battery life. you know, so in other words, there's a battery in each side and they are connected to each other, no surprise, and communicate with each other. So that that should last. the battery when it's opened up fully lasts supposedly for up to thirty-one hours of video playback.
forty four hours if you're only using the outer display. Tom, you sent me a little thing in in messages, a a picture of the size of this compared to our favorite field notes. Actually, Joe, I think you're a Field Notes fan as well.
Joe Moyer (08:31)
I am. Yep.
Jeff Battersby (08:32)
it is just a teeny bit smaller height wise than than the than a a standard notebook. So breast pocket
Tom Anderson (08:41)
And I've seen people
post that it is almost the size of the magic trackpad. So if you have one of those, it and I measured it before we got started, it's pretty close. It's not quite identical, but it's close enough for yeah, comparison sake. and I was curious
Jeff Battersby (08:55)
Darn close to that. Yeah. So pretty good size.
Tom Anderson (09:00)
about the battery stuff when we were before we did the show this morning. So I went and looked, you know, Apple's got the compare section for iPhones where you can line them up across top.
And the Pro Max, which we will talk about here shortly, got a big bump in battery life. and so it's up to forty-five hours of video playback. so compared to the thirty-six on the eighteen pro, and so Apple's I think their all day battery life is kind of that average of well, if you use the two screens equally, it's gonna shake out to be about this much.
I get two hours on my Pro Max, which is a big turd. I'm like, so well anything's better than that. I'm like, what an upgrade.
Jeff Battersby (09:44)
Ha
Joe Moyer (09:47)
Yeah. Yeah, right.
Tom Anderson (09:49)
Yeah. So that's yeah. But fast charging
Jeff Battersby (09:53)
Yeah, so anyway,
Tom Anderson (09:54)
is good.
Jeff Battersby (09:56)
fast charging is great. I think
that's across all devices now too, right? All the all the new phones is basically get
Tom Anderson (10:02)
Yeah, the
Jeff Battersby (10:03)
to fifty
Joe Moyer (10:03)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (10:03)
fifty percent in fifteen minutes. Is that what they said?
Tom Anderson (10:06)
So
they said twenty on the duo and then fifteen minutes on the two pro models. So a little quicker
Jeff Battersby (10:12)
Okay.
Tom Anderson (10:12)
on those.
Jeff Battersby (10:13)
All right. Which makes sense, you know.
Tom Anderson (10:15)
Yeah, one battery versus
two, but
Jeff Battersby (10:18)
Get it. so anyway, the the if you're only using the five point four inch outer display battery lasts up to forty four hours. I I I don't know how many people are only going to be using that. anybody stuck a notebook up to their ear to see how big this thing is? Is it a waffle or is it okay? No?
Joe Moyer (10:42)
Not yet, but I it yeah, it might be a little large. It's
Tom Anderson (10:43)
I am not no, I went. Go ahead. Yeah.
Joe Moyer (10:47)
just the
Jeff Battersby (10:47)
Mm-hmm.
Joe Moyer (10:48)
this form factor will will just s take some getting used to, I think, in general for people, you know, even using it. I think it's beautiful. As beautiful as it could be, it definitely beat my expectations. but I think when you're talking on it, it's gonna take some getting used to for those of us who, you know, have been using more traditional iPhone for a while.
Jeff Battersby (11:07)
Joe, you're the journaling guide. You should have a notebook somewhere near at hand. You should be able to stick it up to your
Tom Anderson (11:12)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (11:13)
rear. There you go. Let's see.
Joe Moyer (11:16)
So
yeah. I mean
Tom Anderson (11:16)
Mm-hmm.
Joe Moyer (11:17)
it's this is this is one of new Ug Bunk's new products. It's actually mini folders for your cards, because I'm going deep, guys. but it's basically the size of one of those field notes. yeah, I mean it's it's not bad. You know, it's I've seen some of the the Android folding phones in the wild and they look they they kind of stand out anyway because they're just unique, right? They're a different form factor. but what I
really noted about them when I see them in in the wild is that they just seem very thick. And I, you know, I'm hoping that what Apple has done with this is obviously it's going to be thicker by nature, but it seems like it's going to be a little bit more of a of a a form factor that's kind of blends in a little bit more, I think. So
Tom Anderson (12:00)
Yeah, and this is why I wanted to go to see the new Samsung Fold eight. And so when I went over
Jeff Battersby (12:05)
Yes.
Tom Anderson (12:06)
to Best Buy a little while ago, that's what I wanted to see because you know the rumor was Apple's was going to be a similar size based off of those leaked ones last year, the three D models, three D print models and
I couldn't get it up to my head because of the anti-theft cord was on it. And so I couldn't try it.
Jeff Battersby (12:24)
Ha.
Tom Anderson (12:25)
I was like, damn it. But
Joe Moyer (12:26)
It's a great way to sell it, right?
Tom Anderson (12:29)
I couldn't do that. but it felt perfectly fine in hand. Now this one, the the duo's a little thicker than the fold eight. I mean, not much. We're talking a couple millimeters. the fold eight when it was closed.
was about the same thickness as my seven or sixteen Pro Max with the case on it. So it's not that they're not that big.
Joe Moyer (12:54)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (12:57)
and of course it's shorter. So I my suspicion is in the pocket it's going to be better because it's not going to be so tall. So if your pockets aren't deep, and I'm not talking about money, which is what you will need to buy this thing. right, you'll have plenty of room and so your cash won't be in the way.
Joe Moyer (13:11)
They'll be empty once you buy it, so there'll be plenty of room for your duo. Right.
Tom Anderson (13:17)
and so I think pocketability will will be okay for it. because this one the the duo is a little shorter than the fold eight, if I recall correctly. Again, not by much, but but some.
Joe Moyer (13:33)
Yeah, it's it's remarkable. You know, I rewatched the the V video this morning and they were talking about all the engineering and all the planning and design work they've been you doing and the way that I you know, it was the the different parts of the screen are laminated, but it seems as though when the f when the phone closes, the lamination moves as well. So
Jeff Battersby (13:56)
Mm-hmm.
Joe Moyer (13:56)
I mean it's it's really impressive the work they put into this. And I think they said they've been working on it for seven years, ten years.
and it shows. I mean, watching them open and close it, that like you said, Jeff, just the sound of it was great. the fact that
Jeff Battersby (14:10)
Amazing.
Joe Moyer (14:10)
it seems like you can kind of keep it open at an angle and almost have it like an alarm clock or watching a video, you know, it just seems like they really put a lot of thought into it and it's it's it's a really neat looking phone. It's I'm glad we finally got to see it.
Jeff Battersby (14:24)
Yeah. Hey, Tom, I know you did, but Joe, did you see the Joanna Stern video?
Joe Moyer (14:31)
I did not see that, no.
Jeff Battersby (14:32)
it pretty slick and one of the things that she did is she set it up like a teeny tiny little laptop because you can have the keyboard down below and the the display up
Joe Moyer (14:40)
Right.
Jeff Battersby (14:42)
above. And you know, not that anybody's gonna be using it for that, but I I could certainly see somebody, you know, trying to out or trying to make it be that that kind of thing.
Joe Moyer (14:56)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (14:57)
I don't type very well on virtual keyboards anyway. I don't type well on regular keyboards.
Tom Anderson (15:01)
Ha ha ha
Jeff Battersby (15:02)
For that matter. But
so, you know, and and Tom has been the beneficiary of my worst typing on more occasion than one, you know. I'm all thumbs, which is what you're supposed to be when you're using these key you know, these virtual keyboards. But man, I I don't know that I'd be be doing too much that way. I
Joe Moyer (15:24)
Mm-hmm. Right.
Jeff Battersby (15:25)
I will say and you know, we d Tom, you and I have talked about this before.
I am begging for something that is more Mac OS like. I I didn't see anything about this being plugged into a display, but man, if if for two thousand bucks if you could have this thing in your pocket, you've got an iPad mini, you've got a phone, you've got, you know, a a regular screen like we would expect to to normally have on a phone, and if I could plug it into a display and have it be like my computer, man.
I y then it's then it is kind of the all in one device. Don't need a laptop anymore. Don't need a you know, don't need anything like that. I could I could just have this. so I hope that's somewhere in our future. one of the other things that this has that w as Tom notes in our notes was kind of a surprise, but I'm happy to see is you can use it with Apple Pencil. does not
use the the magnetic Apple pencil that, you know, charges by clicking onto the side of your clicking onto the side of your iPad uses the USB C version, which I get, you know, that makes sense. was there any way that you could see I I I don't recall seeing anything about being able to attach that to the phone. Does it attach to the phone? Yeah.
Tom Anderson (16:49)
No, you have to plug it in.
Jeff Battersby (16:51)
No, no, no, no.
Joe Moyer (16:51)
Right. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (16:51)
I'm talking for carrying purposes. you know, do the charging. Yeah. So that thing's your
Tom Anderson (16:54)
Mm. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (16:56)
pencil's flopping around in your pocket. So case manufacturer's gonna have a a heyday, you know, the the ability to do something magic. this is gonna be tough though. You know, fold, unfold. you know, it it'll be interesting to
Joe Moyer (17:11)
And pencil storage.
Jeff Battersby (17:13)
Yeah, it it'll it'll be interesting to see. Lockby, those guys might be
Joe Moyer (17:18)
Yeah, I was
I was thinking lock me. They still haven't gotten me. They st they still haven't gotten me there. Yep. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (17:19)
I was just about to say that. Was just about to say that. And I was like, well,
I might push Joe over the edge if they come out with something like that.
Joe Moyer (17:28)
Yeah, maybe.
Tom Anderson (17:33)
Yeah, so the pencil support was a surprise. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (17:36)
A nice feature though. I like it.
Joe Moyer (17:38)
Yeah, nice surprise.
Tom Anderson (17:39)
Yep, it was.
I would imagine two or three hardware revisions down the line we'll see better pencil support, perhaps,
Jeff Battersby (17:50)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (17:51)
where like the magnetic
Joe Moyer (17:51)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (17:52)
one will somehow work or they'll come up with some way to sync connectivity between iCloud and then it just works. You don't have to connect it, attach it, do anything weird. would not surprise me, or handoff or something like that.
Jeff Battersby (18:02)
Or golf pencil sized pencil.
Joe Moyer (18:04)
Yeah.
The pencil duo.
Jeff Battersby (18:07)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (18:08)
The Apple Pencil Mini
Duo Plus.
Joe Moyer (18:10)
Yep.
Just four hundred and ninety nine dollars and you will get
Jeff Battersby (18:13)
That's all. Right.
Joe Moyer (18:15)
yeah.
Tom Anderson (18:16)
Drop in the bucket.
Joe Moyer (18:17)
Yep. Yep, it is.
Jeff Battersby (18:18)
Yeah.
Joe Moyer (18:19)
Now I I think that's a really and then then I was thinking about the journaling applications for that. You know, if you got your pencil and you want to do you know, journaling kind of by handwriting, that that might be kind of a cool way to do it on the on the duo.
Tom Anderson (18:32)
Mm-hmm. Yeah, and they they did a really looks to be a really, really nice job of adapting iOS to the form factor, which not a surprise, all the photobles have done this. so they're not the first to do it. this is obviously the first for iOS to do that. And just you know, having the ability to split screen the apps, group the apps,
I'll be curious, see when I messed around with the fold eight, some of its transitions were not very smooth. So, like if I had it shut and I opened it, that wasn't too bad. But when I went from landscape to portrait, there was like a delay there for that to kind of snap into place a couple of times. That may just be software and they can fix that. I don't, you know, wouldn't surprise me if it was. but you know, they moved all of the controls over to the edge of the screen.
Again, nothing new for people who have used photo wolves before. but the one status bar that I liked and I know Jeff liked and we talked about it with Ben Young Savage this week, is that combined Wi-Fi cell signal battery status bar thing. It's it's so
Jeff Battersby (19:50)
So
Joe Moyer (19:51)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (19:52)
stupid to be so excited about that, but I love that thing. Yeah,
Jeff Battersby (19:56)
It it's amazing. Yeah.
Joe Moyer (19:56)
It's delightful.
Tom Anderson (19:58)
it's really nice.
Joe Moyer (19:59)
Yeah. That's what I think that's
Jeff Battersby (20:01)
Yeah. And
Joe Moyer (20:02)
the best part of Apple sometimes is yeah, and it does this really cool thing that it doesn't need to do and it just just makes us happy.
Jeff Battersby (20:09)
Yeah. It's
Tom Anderson (20:09)
After you see it
twenty times you'll like, Meh, whatever, but right now it's like that's that's really
Jeff Battersby (20:14)
Woo
Tom Anderson (20:14)
nice.
Joe Moyer (20:15)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (20:16)
Well and it's kind of like that the clickiness of the the open and close too. You know, that's unnecessary, you know, but it's it it definitely I don't know. It it it it for me it does something to my insides. Those kind of little details matter, you know, and it I I I love it. speaking of details, dual cameras, the point five
one X and two X only. I know a couple things, Tom, for your deal breakers. cameras I think are a deal breaker and touch ID. how do you feel about the cameras?
Tom Anderson (21:00)
Not a surprise that that's what they are at this point. So
Here's the thing.
Jeff Battersby (21:13)
What's the thing, Tom?
Joe Moyer (21:15)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (21:15)
There's lots of things, but here's the thing regarding the cameras.
I really want to see like sample photos, like when it gets in people's hands, like Tyler Stallman and the people who are really like photography nerds and see what they do come up with because all of Apple's photos they share during the event always look great. They've looked great since they put a camera in the phone. And
Jeff Battersby (21:37)
amazing. Right.
Joe Moyer (21:40)
Right.
Tom Anderson (21:40)
you know, and I could take that picture and it would not look like that because it doesn't look like that coming out. There
Joe Moyer (21:45)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (21:45)
there's a reason pro photographers are pro photographers and I'm not.
And the things they do with the images after. but I think for most people, my wife included, who wants this, she's not gonna care. She's got like a 13 or 14 Pro Max. She doesn't listen, so I'll say this. She always takes awful pictures anyway. It's I've told her this, so this is not a secret. but she just doesn't care. I mean it's
Joe Moyer (22:15)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (22:15)
Wait wait a second. I'm texting texting
Joe Moyer (22:17)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (22:17)
Tammy
right now.
Tom Anderson (22:18)
It's
it's literally like most people. It's like I hold it up there, I take the picture, I look at it, it looks perfectly fine to me because she's not into that. So if you say, What's a beautiful photograph look like? She doesn't care. Like she knows it when she sees it. Like if she sees something in a magazine,
Joe Moyer (22:31)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (22:32)
she's like, wow, that's a really pretty picture. But for her day-to-day stuff where she's taking pictures of her plants or her chickens in the backyard or
Jeff Battersby (22:39)
The chickens, yeah.
Tom Anderson (22:40)
whatever it is, it
Joe Moyer (22:41)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (22:42)
it doesn't matter. and I think
For the people who do really care about that, which tends to be us, three of us here, a bunch of others, that's what the pro models are for. and we'll talk about the camera changes there in a couple of minutes. But so I mean, it's it's one of those things. I think what's interesting, so they've got the 12 megapixel front camera with center stage and everything. So, you know, reframes the shot and all that stuff. which the pro models have 18 megapixel front cameras.
But something they showed in the video is you could use the forty-eight megapixel rear camera to do a selfie because when you have it open, the front screen becomes the viewfinder for the shot. So you probab I don't know if you get the center stage kind of, you know, auto framing and all that kind of stuff with it, but you could do that. So I think they've done a nice job like with the flexibility that
Jeff Battersby (23:39)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (23:40)
the device gives with the different ways you can open it. You can cle you know
use it like as an alarm clock at night and I thought that was pretty cool where they had it light up, you know, kinda put some natural light in the room. That was kind of cool.
Joe Moyer (23:50)
Yeah. Yeah, as that was a very neat feature. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (23:55)
so they did a lot of creative things with the form factor, which I'll be honest, all of this looks super fun to me. And I really, really want it. So Jeff just kinda get ready. So
Jeff Battersby (24:07)
All right. Make make it a note.
Tom Anderson (24:11)
yeah. So all right, let's just just get this out of the way.
I
don't know if you guys saw this or not, but there is a new feature coming. iPhone handle.
Joe Moyer (24:26)
Yes.
Jeff Battersby (24:27)
Yes.
Tom Anderson (24:27)
Where you're gonna have two phones because why settle for one, Jeff? You're gonna have two, bro. And
Jeff Battersby (24:29)
Yeah. I 'cause why not have to? right.
Joe Moyer (24:34)
True.
Tom Anderson (24:35)
and just move the number over, just hold it up, take it go. so I was like, hmm. So I looked at that. And then I thought, Well, I don't wanna get the eighteen pro, like I'm not interested in that because it's like it's I've got the sixteen and I just don't think like I think Jeff you're gonna upgrade, but you're coming from the fifteen, so that's
Think makes more sense. But my 16 Pro Max is nearly paid off. I've got like a couple hundred bucks. So Tom's coping mechanisms kick in, and I say, hmm,
Jeff Battersby (25:08)
Ha ha ha.
Tom Anderson (25:11)
what if I just pay the 200 bucks? Pro Max is done. I keep it. I get the duo. I'm living the best of both worlds because I still got my.
Point five 1x2x 5x pro system on the 16 Pro. I got all the fun stuff on the Duo. And I'm like, hmm. So I'm just saying, I'm not saying I'm gonna do it.
Jeff Battersby (25:36)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (25:37)
I'm not saying I'm not gonna do it.
Joe Moyer (25:39)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (25:40)
But this is why I should not like research these things. Because it's like
Jeff Battersby (25:45)
Joe, what's the
college numbers on on on on Tom five minutes after that shows
Tom Anderson (25:48)
Ha ha ha
Joe Moyer (25:48)
Right? Yeah, it's yeah. Right.
Jeff Battersby (25:53)
up for his wife order and one for himself.
Joe Moyer (25:55)
Yep.
I could definitely see that happening. yeah, might as well. Maybe there's some kind of an odd discount.
Tom Anderson (25:58)
We may just order two at the same time.
Jeff Battersby (25:58)
Yeah. Yeah. Get it over with pal.
Tom Anderson (26:04)
So
Jeff Battersby (26:04)
I will say though, y you know, th the thing that really kinda got stuck for you was was the touch ID. But y you'd you'd survive that?
Tom Anderson (26:20)
I think I'd try it. I know I said I'd be out, but
Joe Moyer (26:22)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (26:25)
to the surprise of no one listening.
Jeff Battersby (26:28)
Right. Yeah. Tom's Tom's easily swayed. How's that vision?
Tom Anderson (26:33)
You know, speaking of
Jeff Battersby (26:34)
It shows up by the way. They they still got sitting around. It's not like it's
Joe Moyer (26:38)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (26:38)
disappeared.
Tom Anderson (26:39)
Mm-hmm. And we won't spend much time on this, but I did want to say, so, you know, Apple TV's picked up Major League Baseball a few years back. So this year, the last three or four Friday nights, they've done live immersive baseball games. And so the first one was at Yankee Stadium, the second one was at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Last night, I hadn't seen this one yet, but they were at in San Francisco, it's Giant Stadium, so that's still ATT maybe.
Jeff Battersby (27:08)
Yeah, it it is in a great part.
Tom Anderson (27:09)
I think it is, but
that has been amazing. It like the the announcers are kind of laid back and not over the top and they don't I don't the 'cause sometimes like the Lakers games when they were on, I w just wasn't crazy about the announcing. I was like, can I just turn it off? and I'd like to just sit and watch the game like I'm there. But for baseball it was pretty good.
they've got cameras in the dugouts. They've got cameras, at least in the Pittsburgh game, they them behind home plate kind of looking like right at the top of the or maybe halfway up the backstop. and then they have some outfield cameras. But of course, you can look around and see everything. And so what was interesting in the Pittsburgh game, there was a section up in the upper deck out towards left field. Look like maybe a hundred people out there. I'm assuming they all came together, but they were carrying on out there.
Jeff Battersby (28:01)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (28:02)
Odd chance waving
t-shirts, and you could hear it. And I'm where are those people? Then you just look up and you see them. It's like you're sitting there. so that was really good. It's just a shame that the technology that makes all of these really, really amazing immersive experiences, nobody can tolerate. It's like by and large, right?
Jeff Battersby (28:20)
at least not yet. Right.
Joe Moyer (28:20)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (28:22)
Because they're such big, heavy devices, but that base the baseball games have been fantastic.
Jeff Battersby (28:28)
Well, and how long do you think it's gonna be before it's F one and and MLS? You know, those things are coming too.
Joe Moyer (28:32)
Right.
Tom Anderson (28:33)
Right. If they keep it around long enough.
Joe Moyer (28:34)
Could you imagine F one in the car?
That'd be pretty cool. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (28:36)
my god, yeah. Yeah.
It would be it I I'm sure it would be terrifying, actually.
Joe Moyer (28:41)
Yes.
Yeah. People would be getting motion sickness, you know, at a whole
Tom Anderson (28:44)
Right.
Jeff Battersby (28:45)
Right.
Joe Moyer (28:45)
other level.
Jeff Battersby (28:46)
Yeah. Really interesting.
Tom Anderson (28:46)
Yeah. So that
that that's been good. so anyway, yeah, I don't know. I
Been waiting for this fold fold to bowl because remember we were saying it was the iPhone fold ultra. I'm glad they went with duo, which by the way is a nice throwback to the PowerBook duo back in the 90s.
Jeff Battersby (29:02)
Yeah, I liked it.
Joe Moyer (29:02)
Yep. Yeah, it's a much better name.
Tom Anderson (29:05)
yeah. of course the people went, hey, the Microsoft Duo. I was like, well, yeah, but what's what's that?
Joe Moyer (29:11)
That's okay. Yeah, right?
Jeff Battersby (29:11)
Y Yeah, I don't even know what you're talking about.
Tom Anderson (29:16)
so I don't know, it it's enticing, I'll put it that
way.
Jeff Battersby (29:20)
Yep.
and the enticement is two colors, star white, night gray. sorry, night sky. I don't know why I said gray. and starting prices, nineteen ninety nine for a two hundred and fifty six gig model. By the way, I dn the phone that I'm currently on has two hundred and fifty six gigs and with iCloud storage, that is honestly plenty. I don't need anything more than that.
Twenty one ninety nine for five twelve, twenty five ninety nine for one terabyte, thirty one ninety nine for two terabytes. So, you know, we're entering stratospheric for prices for some of these, you know, it's
Joe Moyer (30:02)
Yeah. That's a lot of money.
Tom Anderson (30:06)
Yeah, those the
component markets really got prices even worse.
So we'll get we'll talk about it a little bit later, but the prices have gone up on the older models too that weren't updated this go round and significant on some models. The base lower ends are I think tolerable and they're pretty reasonable. But once you get up to like one gig, two gig, it gets a little wild. Jeff, I know you're not interested at this point in time. Maybe some point, maybe, but right now, no. Joe, it doesn't sound like you're going to get one, but does
Are you interested at all in the form factor or you just don't really see the appeal or curious? Or where do you land on that?
Joe Moyer (30:48)
I think I am very curious. I'm not gonna get one. I think I was texting Tom with you and Ganon about how I feel like my dog would eat it, 'cause we've got a puppy and she eats everything. So she's eating,
Tom Anderson (30:58)
Ha ha ha.
Jeff Battersby (30:59)
Ha ha ha
Joe Moyer (31:01)
you know, my glasses. She's eating a mouth gar like she'll just eat anything. So I just it feels a little too precious for me to get right now. but I think it's really neat. You know, I think the the opportunity to see where it goes would would be
It is gonna be cool. I'd love to try it. I'm you know, I'm a little reluctant to try it also because I might like it. so I'm on the fence. I'm leaning more towards upgrading, you know, to like a a pro to the 18 Pro, but it is it is enticing to me. I just w worry that it would get, you know, beat up a little bit quicker than I'd like, but that might just be my reality that I need to accept. So
Tom Anderson (31:46)
Apple care. Mm-hmm.
Joe Moyer (31:47)
Yeah. I mean I did it with my iPad Pro. I you know, one
Jeff Battersby (31:48)
Yeah, right.
Joe Moyer (31:50)
night I realized the screen was cracked. I don't know how it happened. And within twenty minutes I sent them whatever, ninety-nine bucks, and they had a new iPad coming my way. So you're right, it is, it's there. most likely not gonna not gonna get the the duo. Although to your point, the if I had a newer iPhone, mine I also have a pro a fifteen pro. That's why I think they're doing the handoff for people who are curious and have a relatively new phone and have
A
little extra money. so they can have both. And that's you know, that's kind of a smart idea for for people like you, Tom, and and potentially like me in the future that wants both, you know, but wants to still kind of have the the regular form factor of the phone. So undecided, but most likely not, I would say, is my final verdict.
Tom Anderson (32:35)
Ha ha.
Jeff Battersby (32:38)
important to list a couple of things that are missing on the iPhone Duo. so just so we you know we're very clear about this, a dedicated telephoto lens. all the all the new ones have up to eight X in telephoto, which is huge. it's one of things I'm actually looking forward to in the eighteen pro.
no variable aperture, which is a new feature in the eighteen pros. I would expect to see that in the next version of this. that that variable aperture feature. I presume by variable aperture you're talking about the the physical aperture that that the new phones have. it only has a twelve megapixel d center stage camera. So, you know
Not quite as good. No action button, which for some people is gonna be a dream come true. I
Tom Anderson (33:38)
Do you use the action button? Either of you?
Jeff Battersby (33:40)
always use it. I have it hooked to halide and I'm using halide every friggin' day, which by the way, that's one of the things I'm really looking forward to is the folks over at Lux. They usually do a deep dive on all these. They've got a lot on their plate right now. You know, they've got it they've got the duo and they've got the they've got the the new pro models.
Tom Anderson (33:59)
Yeah, and Apple updated a bunch of the camera features on the new phones and the duo
Jeff Battersby (34:03)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (34:04)
gets some of it. it doesn't get the pro controls that are on the pro models. but some of the photographic styles and things like that do carry over. and I wonder like how much of this remember they they pulled the guy away from Haleye that was one of the founders, Sebastian DeWitt, I think is his name. Sorry if
Jeff Battersby (34:26)
Uh-huh.
Tom Anderson (34:27)
I did not
say that correctly or if that's completely incorrect, but I think that's close. and so
Joe Moyer (34:31)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (34:32)
he obviously is a a great addition to an already excellent camera crew over there, yeah. So
Jeff Battersby (34:37)
Camera crew. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (34:40)
Joe, do you use the action button for anything?
Joe Moyer (34:43)
yeah, I think it's my mute button, you know. Like I don't really
Tom Anderson (34:46)
Okay.
Joe Moyer (34:46)
I don't really use it that much, to be honest. So but
Tom Anderson (34:51)
Yeah, the only thing
I use it for I set up a folder and I put like you can put eight things in it, like shortcuts, it's a s a folder of shortcuts. and the only thing I use it for is like a shortcut to the remote start app for my car. So if I
Joe Moyer (35:05)
There you go.
Tom Anderson (35:06)
didn't have
Jeff Battersby (35:06)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (35:06)
it, I wouldn't miss it really. It was like mm. what else are we missing off of the
Jeff Battersby (35:12)
i face ID. So we've already talked about that. So
Tom Anderson (35:14)
Right. Yep.
Jeff Battersby (35:15)
have touch ID. which by the way, our friend Benjamin Savage, who has a fair amount of facial hair, said that face ID touch ID is way better for him than face ID is. So yeah, it it can be dude, he's he's a bear. That man
Tom Anderson (35:28)
Yeah, beards make it tricky, it sounds like. And he has a he has a luxurious beard. It's nice. I'm so jealous. Like, yeah, I could I could
Joe Moyer (35:33)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (35:37)
not shave for the rest of my life. And he could shave
Joe Moyer (35:39)
Ha ha.
Jeff Battersby (35:39)
Right. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (35:41)
for an hour or a shave and then an hour later he'd have more than I would after I didn't shave for the rest of my life. Yeah. It's it's a great beer.
Jeff Battersby (35:45)
Right. Yeah. Yeah. And I I'm the same
as you. I could I could grow some some hair, but if I if I let it go for a month, it just looks like some guy you know, living on a tent in a tent on the streets, you know, who just doesn't have access to
Tom Anderson (35:59)
Ha
Jeff Battersby (36:03)
that would that would be me, which is probably, you know, just about right for me. no no LiDAR scanner and then you know, as you already said, Tom, no no program.
No no pro controls, pro raw, pro res raw, spatial photos and videos, none of that stuff available. So, you know, there's
Tom Anderson (36:23)
Yeah, there was
a post if I can f I pasted it in here somewhere. it was Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (36:29)
Yeah, it's it's at the bottom of the the Mac rumors. Yeah, yeah.
Tom Anderson (36:34)
so there was a guy that posted in the forum. because it was in the comments section on that here are the ten things the duo doesn't have that the pro has. And so he kind of flipped that and was like, the iPhone Pro is missing these iPhone Duo features, so for a different perspective if you want to call it.
Jeff Battersby (36:50)
Yeah. Yeah.
Joe Moyer (36:51)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (36:52)
So it was
Joe Moyer (36:52)
Right.
Tom Anderson (36:53)
pocketable size. that's debatable. two screens, a larger screen, thinness, when it's open, of course. two app multitasking, touch ID, like for Ben, that's a feature. He loves that way more than the face ID. two FaceTime cameras, which we didn't really touch on that. The internal FaceTime camera is under the display,
Jeff Battersby (37:19)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (37:20)
and they did a
Joe Moyer (37:20)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (37:20)
really nice job with.
putting that little pixel overlay over it so that when you're not using it it kind of disappears. Now if you're looking at off axis in some of the videos that I was looking at, you can kind of see it reflects differently than the rest of the screen. but looking at it straight on it kind of disappears. So that was cool. he's got a built-in nightstand, a built-in stand, two batteries, the photo cue screen like for the selfies and things like that.
Jeff Battersby (37:43)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (37:44)
thought it was fun they put the kid mode on there where you could have like Snoopy running around trying to get your kids
Joe Moyer (37:48)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (37:49)
to laugh so you could take the picture. That was pretty clever.
so pros and cons, just depends which one.
Jeff Battersby (37:56)
Yeah, yeah, exactly correct. And we know that you'll
Joe Moyer (37:58)
Pros and duos.
Jeff Battersby (37:59)
you'll
Tom Anderson (38:00)
Right.
Jeff Battersby (38:02)
you'll Well done. That was well played. Try the V
Joe Moyer (38:04)
Thank you. I'm here here all week, everybody. Try the veal.
Tom Anderson (38:05)
That was good.
Jeff Battersby (38:12)
Yeah,
Tom Anderson (38:10)
Ha ha ha.
Jeff Battersby (38:12)
so anyway, we'll we'll find out very shortly, probably five minutes after your wife gets hers, you'll be in the queue to order your own, or maybe you'll order two at once. We'll see.
Joe Moyer (38:25)
Yeah, I think Tom will be opening his as his wife is opening hers, probably. You know, his and hers duos I think is a great it's a you know,
Jeff Battersby (38:32)
Yeah, there you go. Love that.
Joe Moyer (38:33)
couple's duos. See if my wife is interested. Yep. Yep.
Tom Anderson (38:35)
Couples that duo together stay together. Take that any way you want.
Jeff Battersby (38:38)
There you there you go.
Excellent. yeah, onward.
Tom Anderson (38:42)
On, shall we?
Jeff Battersby (38:43)
And we can fly through this other stuff because it's not, you know, the big the big reveal, which wasn't even really a reveal, was the was the pro. sorry, the duo. The the pros, same basic footprint as the previous versions. We've got a couple of different colors. Apple has been touting this new f vapor chamber that they have that
is a cooling mechanism. I I would say for me, and this is the reason that I ordered one this morning, is that the that the camera and the camera and the pro. I got the pro and not the pro max this time, which I'm happy. I'm happy to have the smaller the smaller size. we've got the the variable aperture of physical aperture.
On the phone, which will prove to be pretty interesting, I think. I can't wait to play with that with that particular feature. Faster also has the A20 chip, which we didn't really talk about. And frankly, you know why are we talking about chips anyway? Reminds me of the old Intel.
Tom Anderson (39:53)
Apparently it got a nice boost.
Jeff Battersby (39:54)
It did get a
Joe Moyer (39:55)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (39:55)
nice boost. yeah. I mean it's
Tom Anderson (39:56)
They put a second neural engine in. So it's thirty two cores
now, which would be good. And that's in the duo as well. So th all the ones announced this week got
Jeff Battersby (40:05)
Yeah, they all they do have that. I mean it'll be interesting to see. I don't know how big a difference. I'm not doing anything that's massively computational. No, I'm not. I'm not.
Tom Anderson (40:11)
Right. I'm not pushing mine to really notice it either. It'll
still stutter when I strive scroll, but it's like okay.
Jeff Battersby (40:22)
I I I hope not. we are already mentioned fifteen percent fifty percent charge in fifteen minutes. supposedly thirty hours of usage per charge, I'll believe it when I see it. you know, I Tom's
Joe Moyer (40:39)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (40:40)
Tom's dies when it's sitting on his desk.
I mean I I definitely use mine but I've yet to have any battery usage that is what is purported. It's never been that great. Of course, you know, I'm old and I don't dim my screen to to make it so it's using less power. I'm I'm blessed.
Tom Anderson (41:00)
Yeah, and I still think my
battery issues are tied to some
Jeff Battersby (41:05)
IOS.
Tom Anderson (41:06)
app or something. I th well
Joe Moyer (41:07)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (41:07)
I think that was part of it. And I think I I haven't tried this yet. Maybe I should just turn off all of the background app refresh stuff. because
Jeff Battersby (41:14)
Mm.
Tom Anderson (41:15)
when it's in night mode overnight, like I charge it, goes on the nightstand, it's at a hundred percent. I wake up, it's at ninety eight percent, you know, six, seven hours later. At work or during the day, it's obviously not in sleep mode. and
then you can just look in the battery stats and just see it like just plummet. Like
Then I don't use it a lot. Like it's it's it's something
Joe Moyer (41:37)
Yeah, something's going on there. Right.
Tom Anderson (41:43)
but yeah, whatever.
Jeff Battersby (41:45)
Yeah. So anyway, we'll see. but the new cameras are are interesting to me. New Dynamic Island is also, which now will display up to three live activities, which I
Tom Anderson (41:56)
Yeah, we get three live activities, right? Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (41:59)
I gotta say I love the Dynamic Island. I
Tom Anderson (42:01)
I do too.
Jeff Battersby (42:01)
it it really
Joe Moyer (42:02)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (42:02)
is it's a it's a great feature. and I use it all the time. I you know, I I use it to see what songs play and whatever it is that's going on. It's
Tom Anderson (42:13)
Wort
scores, weather. Yeah, it's really nice.
Jeff Battersby (42:15)
Yeah. It's it's so
having that that third option's gonna be pretty good. we got four colors here black, silver, glacier, burgundy. and eighteen pro starts at eleven ninety nine, eighteen pro max at twelve ninety nine, and you know, you can go upwards from there. all the way up to two terabytes in the seventeen pro Max.
Tom Anderson (42:39)
Yeah, which is five hundred dollars more than the comparable seventeen Pro Max. That's those component price
Joe Moyer (42:44)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (42:45)
changes that we were talking about. Huge jump.
Jeff Battersby (42:45)
Yeah. Really, really
yeah, killing things. like I said, I I actually pre-ordered one this morning. I got one in Burgundy, which I think is more cherry than Burgundy. We'll see. And I'm wondering the black one looks pretty good too. but I I've I really loved the blue of the seventeen series that
when I saw it in real
Tom Anderson (43:13)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (43:13)
life, I really, really dug it. But so I'm disappointed that's not available here. Not surprised, but disappointed. but the Burgundy I think would be pretty interesting. So so looking forward to that. i very nice looking options and like I said I'm really waiting to see what Lux posts once they get in their hands to
as far as what the camera capabilities are and what they're gonna do with that. The current version, as I said I think in last week's episode, maybe an episode before that, or last the last episode, since we don't do it every week. the Haylight, the new version is brilliant and I have been using it. That has become my regular camera. I very rarely now use the Apple's built in camera.
other than for videos and things like that. So I am curious to see what they do with this and I'm excited excited to see what Halide is gonna offer. but Halide for the first time for me is is I tried to make it a regular use camera for a long time with this new version. It it is my regular use camera. It's the one I use all the time.
Tom Anderson (44:33)
Nice. Joe, which color do you like out of these four?
Joe Moyer (44:38)
I think so I have the fifteen pro and it's kind of the the darker blue. I kinda like them all. I think the the black because it's boring in black. actually the glacier I kind of am interested in, but I'm I'm not sure if it's what I'm seeing on the screen is actually what it will look like, you know, in
Tom Anderson (44:58)
Mm-hmm.
Joe Moyer (44:58)
person. So probably not the burgundy. I like the color. I just think it's it's not the right fit for me. but
Probably the black of the glacier would be what I was looking at. And and Jeff, I wanted to ask, you said you did you stay at two fifty six or did you bump up to Yeah. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (45:14)
Yes, did it I have no reason not to. I looked at
I looked at I'm using half of the two fifty six on my current
Joe Moyer (45:21)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (45:21)
phone right now, so I don't need anything more.
Joe Moyer (45:24)
Yeah, I've got the the two fifty six now and I was thinking about upgrading, but similarly I I haven't used it all. So, you know, there's that that sort of old school mentality that I have where when you upgrade you wanna get more space because of
Jeff Battersby (45:38)
Right.
Joe Moyer (45:38)
how we used to be with computers, right?
Jeff Battersby (45:41)
Right.
Joe Moyer (45:41)
but I'm not sure it's necessary, you know. So yeah. Right, right. I'm not gonna be
Jeff Battersby (45:43)
I I don't think so either. Not for what I'm using it for at all. Yeah.
Joe Moyer (45:47)
out shooting pro video or or photos. So right.
Jeff Battersby (45:50)
And even then you can attach a
you can attach a drive to it. So it's not a not
Joe Moyer (45:55)
Yeah, that's a great point.
Jeff Battersby (45:57)
a necessary feature. Not and not for me anyway.
Joe Moyer (45:59)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (46:02)
yeah, so that's that's me. That will be showing up a week from a week from yesterday. So on the
Joe Moyer (46:10)
Very nice.
Jeff Battersby (46:10)
on the eighteenth. Tom's anniversary in mine. Yeah. Is that correct, Tom? Did I make did I get that right? Yeah, yeah.
Tom Anderson (46:17)
That is correct. You did.
Jeff Battersby (46:19)
Look at me. Remembering your anniversary.
Joe Moyer (46:23)
That's impressive.
Tom Anderson (46:23)
Always remember yours
too.
Jeff Battersby (46:24)
So
Tom Anderson (46:28)
We're in good shape as long as we don't forget our own. It's like it's nice that you were
Jeff Battersby (46:31)
Sh yeah, well
Yeah. Yeah, hey Tom,
Joe Moyer (46:33)
Yep. Maybe worth just texting each other, you know, hey.
Jeff Battersby (46:38)
just a reminder.
Joe Moyer (46:39)
Yep. Rep. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (46:39)
Happy anniversary, bro. thanks. yeah.
Jeff Battersby (46:43)
yeah. Flowers, flowers, flowers.
Tom Anderson (46:45)
All right. So the
eighteen Pro and Pro Max are available for pre order now and they will be available at the end of the week as this show publishes. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (46:55)
Yeah, Friday. So
they right on the eighteenth.
Tom Anderson (46:59)
In fact, every other I think everything else they announced aside from the duo is available this week on the 18th.
Speaking of, let's move on to AirPods, shall we?
Jeff Battersby (47:05)
Yes. Correct. Yep. Do it, Tom.
Tom Anderson (47:10)
So we have new AirPods, not the pros, the standard AirPods.
Jeff Battersby (47:14)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (47:18)
and they did not see a price increase. If I recall. I was I was surprised, yeah, because
Jeff Battersby (47:23)
Yeah, shocking. No memory needed.
Tom Anderson (47:26)
they were like, and it's the exact same price. I was like, hmm.
Joe Moyer (47:28)
That's refreshing.
Tom Anderson (47:30)
Yeah. so you know, some improvements on those. Improved noise cancellation audio quality. so active noise cancellation is in the entry level. Where I think before with the four you had the f the regular four that didn't have it, and then you had to upgrade to the one forty nine model or whatever it was at that point. so I think these are gonna be nice.
Saw on the note, my growing collection of AirPods might be getting bigger. Who did that? Is is that you, Joe? Okay.
Joe Moyer (48:01)
That's me. That's me. I've I've I've still got all the old ones. I've got
Jeff Battersby (48:02)
Yeah.
Joe Moyer (48:06)
you know, I've got one with half, you know, one of the AirPods just is gone. So and I think I'm gonna get these at some point. You know, I'm not gonna rush out and get them, but maybe we're getting into the holiday season. So this is one of those kind of easy ish things to say, hey, this is this is what I'd like from from Santa. So
Tom Anderson (48:25)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (48:25)
There you go.
Joe Moyer (48:26)
I don't particularly like the the Pro AirPods with the
you know, the in earbuds with the but the tips. I don't that for some reason those don't work for me. So I I've always just stuck with kind of the the air pods unless when I've upgraded in the past I've paid the extra money for the noise cancellation. So it's nice that it's just included.
Jeff Battersby (48:47)
Yeah. And I I let a very filthy joke just slip right by, so
Tom Anderson (48:53)
Good, I am so proud of you.
Joe Moyer (48:53)
There you go. Yep, you can
keep your clean rating, guys, for one more show, do you know?
Tom Anderson (48:59)
You you behave so well when we have guests.
Jeff Battersby (49:01)
Yeah, right, I do. When it's just you, it's most most of the time. All right. Yeah, not in the market for those for me.
Joe Moyer (49:04)
Most of the time, yeah.
Tom Anderson (49:05)
Yeah, most of the time. Yeah. All right. yeah.
Jeff Battersby (49:12)
interested but you know, interested in seeing but don't you know, I've got th I've actually got two different I I've got some of the beats and I've got the AirPods Pro couple versions back and they're fine for me at
So all right. And then we have a couple Apple Watches, Apple Watch Series twelve and Apple Ultra Four. I I think what's most interesting and I'm curious to know if this is going to work on my current version of of my Apple Watch and I'm still wishing very hard for a ring of some sort. the the
the health options that are gonna start showing up. There I I know that I won't get the sensors, obviously, but it's some of the features that are gonna show up in the health app, they say mid year, I guess, is is when those are gonna show up. i is is interesting to me. audio intelligence, i i I think that's the feature that we're talking about that is listening to every damn thing you're saying.
Tom Anderson (50:23)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (50:23)
And then not re you know, only only on device, you know, keeps it right there, but I don't know. I don't know how I feel about those kinds of things. you know, in the in the hands of the current Apple I'm okay with it. I in hands of some future Apple, I don't I don't know. but it's it's interesting to be able to kind of recap what it is that you've had a conversation with somebody about.
I'm always of a mind, and I know this might be different for the both both of you, that as soon as I start writing stuff down in meetings, I miss other things that I should be writing down in meetings. So that makes sense. I try not to write things down in meetings. I try to recap it after the fact. it and so far my brain's intact enough that
Joe Moyer (51:19)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (51:20)
that I can that I can swing that, but you know, the yeah, I'd keep a pretty good running list in my head of things that I'm able to do and and keep keep there. Anyway, d I don't know how I feel about that feature. I I d I'm interested to see it. but I'm telling ya, I don't know I don't know w what my feelings are on it. For you guys, what do you think?
Joe Moyer (51:50)
well, you know, I think based on how they're doing it now, I think they're doing their best to keep it from getting super creepy, at least on Apple's end.
Jeff Battersby (51:58)
Uh-huh.
Joe Moyer (51:59)
I think it will be the user that might be the one that would concern me more. I can definitely see situations even at work. So I I do meetings all the time. That's just most of my job is meetings. some of them are yeah,
Jeff Battersby (52:15)
I pity you.
Joe Moyer (52:16)
well, thank you.
Tom Anderson (52:17)
Ha ha.
Joe Moyer (52:18)
some of them
are sensitive. Some of them are like employee relations things where you know I I would want disclosures to be made if anyone was doing any sort of recording. And that would be my concern that maybe whether it's you know a member of the management team or the you know the employee or however that goes. So that's probably the only thing that I that is a little concerning to me. But you know I I can't I like the I like the feature.
I don't know how often I would actually use it. It's one of those things that sounds really cool, but I'm not sure. You know, it's a what is a fifteen second window. So I'm not sure how often I'd be I'd be accessing it and you know, really just more worried about people misusing it potentially. Tom, what do you think?
Tom Anderson (53:04)
Right.
very much along the same lines. Like it's an interesting idea. And I was talking to a guy at work about it yesterday. But I just don't know day to day how practical it will be to get any value out of it. Like what am I going to use it for? and wonder like, is it going to end up like the walkie-talkie feature on the watch, which was kind of like the Nextel, the modern day Nextel? Remember those sprint nextel phones we used to have and go
Joe Moyer (53:30)
Right. I remember those.
Tom Anderson (53:32)
prr.
Joe Moyer (53:33)
Yep.
Tom Anderson (53:33)
And you talk to
the person like it's a little walkie-talkie. and so I just don't know. Apple's published a white paper for their audio intelligence features, which includes Siri Recap, live rewind, Shazam, which has been around forever, for hey, what song is this? And then sound recognition, which will alert you if it's a doorbell, emergency vehicle, those types of things. which is probably good for accessibility.
For some folks.
Jeff Battersby (54:03)
Yes.
Tom Anderson (54:04)
so yeah, I just don't know. it it seems secure enough on the device, they don't send it anywhere, doesn't like it's not really a transcript per se, except for like the live rewind, which is only 15 seconds, and then it deletes, supposedly, according to Apple's documentation, anyway, within 30 seconds of the wash display dimming. Apparently, it lights up when it's doing something. I'm not quite sure how that's gonna work, but find out when I get it.
Initial feature was, it's spyware. Or my initial reaction was it's spyware. 'cause
Jeff Battersby (54:35)
Yeah.
Joe Moyer (54:34)
Mm.
Tom Anderson (54:38)
I just think and we've had some conversation, side conversations along this. I just
People are getting a little bit tired of some of this stuff. Right? whether
Jeff Battersby (54:48)
Yeah, I am one of them. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (54:51)
it's the flock cameras or it's the meta glasses
Jeff Battersby (54:53)
Planetary
Tom Anderson (54:54)
or it's now this or it's I mean, hey, look, I talked about, you know, the Lockby Fuel Journal to Joe in a chat. I didn't do it in the chat, so I'd be misrepresenting something. But yes, I'm talking to him in person and then I start to see the ads in Facebook, but we're not listening.
Joe Moyer (55:10)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (55:11)
And everybody knows everybody, they're listening to everything. It's like
Jeff Battersby (55:14)
Yeah, right.
Tom Anderson (55:14)
No, we're not. and I just think the the balance there I think is starting to tilt. And so I'm curious to see like how the companies, and I know some with their value systems are not going to do very much. Apple
Jeff Battersby (55:29)
Don't give a crap, right?
Joe Moyer (55:30)
Right.
Tom Anderson (55:31)
tries, at least seems to try to toe the line on privacy stuff. They've kind of put a lot of talk behind it, and I think in a lot of ways it's been validated.
But it'll be interesting to see like it's like now if there's some guy with his watch, do I have to worry he's listening to something? Now supposedly it's not going anywhere. It's not gonna have the you know, what details will it have though? those types of things.
Jeff Battersby (55:56)
Yeah I know.
Tom Anderson (55:57)
Well you're not doing anything. Why do you do anything wrong? Why do you care? It's like, Well, that's not the point.
And it's like,
Joe Moyer (56:02)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (56:03)
Right.
Tom Anderson (56:04)
you know, if I'm in public, that yeah, it's different, right? 'Cause if you're in public, privacy's expectations there. Well, you're in public, so so
Joe Moyer (56:12)
Right.
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (56:13)
I'm not
too worried about it yet, but I think you'll continue to march down this path. it's I don't know, we'll see.
Jeff Battersby (56:21)
It's great for the narcissistic recap of the argument that you had with your partner.
Joe Moyer (56:26)
There you go. Yeah.
Tom Anderson (56:30)
It's right here, see? Siri says it so happy and happy anniversary, honey.
Joe Moyer (56:32)
Yep, let me yeah.
Jeff Battersby (56:32)
Yeah. It's exactly what you said. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I I don't know.
Tom Anderson (56:43)
but the the health features that are coming, or at least on the new watches, they've updated some sensors. They sort of got a redesigned sensor architecture, which
Is going to drastically increase the heart rate measurements that are being taken. every five seconds throughout the day, which is way more than before, sixty times more, give or take. Heart rate variability is going to be sampled way more often, too. so all that I like. That's good. More data's good. because there were windows there where things could happen and it would miss it because it wasn't measuring at that point in time.
Jeff Battersby (57:24)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (57:25)
So this will help. And this is all going to feed into the data that they are going to be surfacing in the health app with the new stuff Jeff alluded to there a few minutes ago, which is going to maybe squeeze a little bit of on the third party apps that do this. Like I've used Athletic for years for some of these types of measurements and numbers. I know Jeff uses, you still using Gentler Street.
Jeff Battersby (57:55)
Yep, love it.
Tom Anderson (57:55)
Okay, so I'm using that. So this could have an effect, it brings visibility to these apps too, because hey, Apple does it, but then we do more. so maybe it you know, rising tide lifts all boats, maybe, but some interesting stuff. Like they'll show your readiness based on those measurements, like hey, you know, how's your recovery for the day, based off of you know, your scores for your heart rate variability, which is a big component of that, combined with sleep, your respiratory rate, all that kind of stuff that they're already tracking.
And then they're going to be adding a health age, which is an algorithmic view of some sorts, and to hey, you're actually fifty-five, but we based off your numbers and everything, you're actually a little below that. Could be that too.
Jeff Battersby (58:40)
Is seventy three.
Joe Moyer (58:41)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (58:43)
Which would still be good information to have, although you're probably
Jeff Battersby (58:46)
Right.
Joe Moyer (58:46)
True.
Tom Anderson (58:47)
aware you're not in very good shape if that's the s situation.
So I I like all of that. Like we've said on I gosh, I can't tell you how many times we've said here that more health data is better and the more visible they can make it is better.
Jeff Battersby (59:02)
But and in a ring, even better. So all right, we're we're Yeah, yeah, lots.
Tom Anderson (59:07)
battery improvements big on the Ultra, up to fifty hours.
Joe Moyer (59:10)
Yeah, that's great.
Tom Anderson (59:12)
so that's two days, which is kinda nice. Still not getting close to Garmin numbers, but a different device.
Jeff Battersby (59:18)
Yeah,
yeah, yeah. And and tracking different.
Tom Anderson (59:21)
So I did upgrade to the Ultra Four. stuck with the natural titanium. Jeff laughed when he's when I told him why, and that's because all of my existing bands have the lugs that are the natural titanium and I didn't want it to clap.
Jeff Battersby (59:38)
Such a deep.
Tom Anderson (59:39)
Well obviously
Joe Moyer (59:42)
Yeah, we know that about Tom.
Tom Anderson (59:45)
Yeah. yeah. What little I have. Keep sliding
Jeff Battersby (59:44)
Yeah, absolutely. Look at his hair. yeah.
Tom Anderson (59:50)
back.
Joe Moyer (59:51)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (59:52)
yeah, no, it's I'm I'm on the current latest version. I don't need to make any changes, so I won't. But
Tom Anderson (59:59)
Yeah, you're on three.
Jeff Battersby (1:00:00)
Yes, sir. And it's serviceable. Works works well. And last year, right. And I do like the black one. It doesn't
Tom Anderson (1:00:02)
Yeah. Yeah, 'cause you upgraded not long ago. You you got the black one when you did that, right? Yeah, it's sharp.
Jeff Battersby (1:00:09)
doesn't clash with any of my bands. So
Tom Anderson (1:00:11)
Good. That's good.
Jeff Battersby (1:00:14)
all right, we're go ahead. I'm sorry, Joe.
Joe Moyer (1:00:14)
Yeah, I I've s I b I was just
gonna say I've got the series eight, so mine is a dinosaur. I thought it was the nine, it's the eight. So the ultra I keep trying the ultra on the store and then it feels a little big, but this might be the year 'cause just I just think it'd be cool to have a watch with fifty hours of battery life. I don't need that, but it's just be great not to have to worry about charging. So so yeah, we do.
Jeff Battersby (1:00:37)
True enough. All right. We've we've
Tom Anderson (1:00:38)
I just love the screen 'cause I beat the
heck out of the series seven I had. It was so soft so it wouldn't crack, but it would pick up scratches left and right. I've had this four years now and there's not a single scratch on it.
Jeff Battersby (1:00:48)
Yeah, yeah, I'm the same. Even even
Joe Moyer (1:00:49)
That's nice. That's good to know.
Jeff Battersby (1:00:50)
in the black, Tom, I don't have any no dings, which I know is the thing that was gonna drive you nuts. Yes, sir. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, we're we're we're
Tom Anderson (1:00:53)
That's good. Yeah. final thing before we wrap up because we're getting a little long here.
Joe Moyer (1:00:55)
Nice. Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (1:01:00)
an hour in.
Tom Anderson (1:01:01)
yeah. And the new operating systems are coming out this week today, if you're listening,
is before
Jeff Battersby (1:01:06)
Today, right. On Monday.
Tom Anderson (1:01:08)
say one o'clock Eastern time on Monday, September 14th. Otherwise, they're already out. Enjoy, go get All of the OS twenty seven versions are out. The betas have been very good, so I suspect these will
Jeff Battersby (1:01:18)
Yeah. Excellent.
Tom Anderson (1:01:19)
be too.
so Apple's done a nice job with these updates so far.
Jeff Battersby (1:01:23)
All right. Let's wind it up.
Tom Anderson (1:01:25)
Let's do
Jeff Battersby (1:01:28)
as always, thanks for coming to listen to us. we appreciate it. We know that you've probably zipped past the end of this now already, but tell your friends, l we've we've actually surpassed twenty thousand downloads now. Is that correct? Yeah.
Tom Anderson (1:01:43)
It is.
Jeff Battersby (1:01:45)
So we're at we're
Joe Moyer (1:01:44)
That's great guys. Congratulations.
Jeff Battersby (1:01:46)
at over twenty K, which is amazing to both of us because we barely want to listen to ourselves talk to each other.
Tom Anderson (1:01:53)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (1:01:54)
so we're grateful to you. Joe Moyer, where can we find you?
Joe Moyer (1:02:00)

Jeff Battersby (1:03:04)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (1:03:05)
newsletter still runs through Beehive, but did move the website a little more flexible.
Jeff Battersby (1:03:09)
Cool, cool. at Reyes Point for me, R E Y E S P O I N T. you know, I post a little watch a lot. I'm a stalker. show music, psychokinetics. did we in last week's put in any of those links to the the videos, the two videos? We should do that in the show notes this week.
Tom Anderson (1:03:33)
I'm not sure. Okay.
Jeff Battersby (1:03:35)
Okay. if you need me to, I'll resend you that. But
Psychokinetics and Cal Rysian, the filthier version of Psychokinetics, have had a couple of things out. Actually Celsius seven too. So a couple of new videos, animations that are a lot of fun. So like you to see that and of course our show artwork, random art design.
Tom Anderson (1:03:56)
All right. That's it. Joe Moyer, thank you sir. Appreciate it as always.
Jeff Battersby (1:04:00)
Yeah, super great.
Joe Moyer (1:04:01)
Thank you guys. Always love coming on. Appreciate the time.
Tom Anderson (1:04:05)
Jeff, thank you, sir.
Jeff Battersby (1:04:06)
Yeah, it's good to be here, Tom, among the living and standing in at about ninety six percent. So it's good stuff. Yes, sir.
Tom Anderson (1:04:09)
All right. That's right. Hey. It's moving in the right direction. All
right. And listeners, thank you. We really do appreciate it. And we'll catch you again in a couple of weeks. Until then, have a great rest of your day or your night.
Jeff Battersby (1:04:25)
See ya.
